PopCap, Games for Health research games as cognitive exercise

Another day, another report either for or against video games. Set for public release in Spring of this year, PopCap Games (Bejeweled, InsaniQuarium, and many other games that have caused you to fail classes) and Games for Health Project have announced a "jointly funded effort...to gather, evaluate, and share research on the use of digital games and cognitive health." The study wants to see how certain games (not necessarily PopCap's, as the press release stresses) can keep minds active and healthier as they age, and possibly improving cognitive ability.

The project hopes to shed some light on the benefits of video games, and by releasing the results public, their conclusions will have a chance to reach mainstream audiences who are quick to denounce video games. However, its affects on society will last only about a week, we predict - after that, another study will be published condemning games for the hazards they can cause to one's health and social life.

[Thanks, bandersnatch]
